For the past month my husband and I have been working on a bedroom makeover. We bought a new bed and dresser, but I was struggling with finding side tables that I loved and weren't over budget. Then I had an epiphany. I could purchase the unfinished wood side tables from Ikea, which are so cheap at $34.99, and redo them. A few years ago I hacked the Ikea Rast 3-drawer chest using napkins and luckily I still had them. This Ikea Tarva Hack Using Napkins is so easy it can be done in just a few days. I just love the fresh color the side tables have brought into our room to tie everything together. The possibilities are endless.
Supplies:
Ikea Tarva nightstand
Stain or paint
Napkins
Mod Podge
Paintbrushes
Scissors
Polyurethane
Decorative knob (optional)
Using the color of your choice stain or paint all of the wood pieces, except the front of the drawer. Apply polyurethane once the stain has dried per manufacturer directions, except to the drawer front. Once the polyurethane dries separate the napkins. The napkins I used had 3 layers per napkin where 2 were plain white and the top layer was the print. Remove them from the print carefully, so it doesn’t tear.
Starting from a corner edge brush a light layer of Mod Podge onto the drawer front. Carefully place your napkin print on top, so it will cover the sides. The napkin will be slightly wrinkly, but that’s what we want as it provides texture and dimension. Work in small sections to ensure coverage and avoid tears.
Match up designs as best you can when adding another napkin. Continue until the drawer front has been completed.
If you need to cut small strips of the napkin to cover any side areas you may have missed depending on your napkin size. Allow to dry fully 2 – 3 hours.
From the back carefully push through your knob screw, so the hole is defined. Go back over your drawer front with a light layer of Mod Podge to seal it. Be sure to work carefully as you don’t want the napkin to get too wet it tears. Allow to fully dry again 2 – 3 hours. Put your side table together and change to the decorative knob if you chose to.
Look how lovely it is from the side with the stained drawers and finished edges.
I just love the fresh color the side tables have brought into our room to tie everything together. The possibilities are endless! For more craft ideas and great food go to  appetiteanarchy.com
