Any deep well composted soil. Water deep as their roots like to grow deep.
Opp's forgot, Lots of sun shine.
Tomatoes are pretty easy to grow. They can be grown in the ground, or in pots on the patio. A couple of things to watch for our worms which are best picked off, and at the juncture of the stem and a good leave there may be a small sprout that if you pinch it off it will help keep your tomato plant bushy and allow it to bear more fruit . If you want to grow tomatoes in the ground, till it first. I would add manure and sand while tilling. The sand is for water retention. Then plant your plant or seed. Use a sunny location for good results. Once the plants start to grow, put a tomato cage on top of it. Water regularly.
Make sure you have healthy soil, not just the dirt that was under the grass. If nothing else, dig a hole much larger in depth and width. You want to put about a third of the plant in the soil, so adjust the depth for that and a little more. Put in good potting soil at least to fill the hole and that will give the plant a good start for the roots to grow in nutritious soil. Tomatoes like somewhat acidic soil, mix in a bit of coffee grounds, and also need extra calcium, whiz some egg shells in the blender until they are real fine to get the calcium into the soil quicker.
