Board and Batten over stucco- Help!!

Help! I have an older stucco house and for the most part its in pretty good shape. There are some areas on the bottom half though that are chipped and buckled slightly . I was thinking of covering or replacing the bottom with Board and batten siding . Do i have to tear it down ? Or can i just cover it?

  • Great question! I hesitate to respond without a photo. Chipping over time happens - it is the buckling that concerns me. There could be some foundation issues that need to be addressed first. Something is under pressure, I would have that looked at before you proceed.

I agree with Naomie. The buckling should be a concern. May be a settling problem. Can the buckling flex with pressure. If it can then it's a problem with the substrate under the stucco that has loosened off the wall. With that you can screw in the buckling and go with the board and batten directly over.

I'm not a contractor, but it seems to me that covering a textured surface like stucco with wood would be a bad idea. Moisture could collect underneath the wood and ruin it. You're likely going to have to replace the stucco but you should ask a professional about the buckling and the possibility of covering it.

Having lived in the southwest for years, where 75% of the homes are stucco, please get a professional to fix the stucco and make sure there is not an underlying issue. Board and batten will not last half as long as stucco and if you ever decide to remove it, you'll have holes all over the stucco from fastening the wood to the walls. People in the southwest cover board and batten with stucco!

I’ve been looking in to this also. I’m not sure what the issue is if the stucco is primed/Painted and a pvc Type 1x2 moulding is glued/nailed over it.
