I use half of potting soil, throw a couple handfuls of compost (from my compost pile) and half of garden soil. You can also add some vermiculite and a few crushed egg shells. This is the formula I use. I usually get one of those large tubs with the rope handles and mix everything in there.
I use potting soil and peat moss. If the potting soil doesn't come with the fertilizer in it I add a little of the granular extended release fertilizer mixed in it.
ive tried a lot of diy soil mixes...equal parts top soil, compost, peatmoss and pearlite Is what container garden likes. There a Mel’s mix the square foot gardener guy...
My grandma taught me to add vermiculite to potting soil. It helps to retain water and release it gradually into the soil. She also put gravel and some broken pieces of charcoal briquets in the bottom for drainage and to keep the soil sweet. If the soil is clay heavy she would add spanish moss or some type moss to help make it more organic. If needed, she would add some sand to help make it drain better. Again it depended on how heavy of clay she was using to make her own potting soil. She was an organic gardener, but she was not above using some Miracle gro too. I hope this helps some.
