More information is needed - are the window boxes in the sun or shade? what growing zone are you in?
Hello. I like to put plants that trail in window boxes. Vinca vines, and million bells are my favorite.
A star like a geranium, a filler, and a spiller (a vine thing that will hang over)
They are very shallow.Geranium, marigold, dusty miller, sweet potato vines for trailing,Zinnia,Calicopra for trailing,Bidens for intertwining for additional color
Petunias, pansies, vinca, alyssum, cyclamen, lobelia, nasturtium, just to name a few
