White patches appear on a refinishing project after polyurethane

I am refinishing a pine desk, about 50 years old, that was originally bought as an unfinished piece. I removed the old stain and varnish, sanded it, then applied Minwax stain (Ipswich Pine). After that dried, I applied Minwax Fast drying Polyurethane. As it dried, white patches appeared on the top of the desk, and on the front of several drawers. Does anyone know why this occurred, and what I should do instead?

Usually poly requires a few coats with sanding inbetween. Try light sanding to see if helps then give another coat

I am guessing it must not have been completely dry! Call or write to the Customer Care department of the company of the products you you used and ask for advise....................

I never had this problem. What ever you used to remove the old stain and varnish wasn't totally removed. Possible the stain wasn't completely dry. Moisture in the wood or stain. The polyurethane wasn't fully stirred. Spraying picked up moisture from the air. Too thick coats of polyurethane. I would lightly sand the white patches and recoat. I always use three coats of a water based polyurethane.

Did you do this project outside in the sun? If so, it may be sun bleached. It happened to me and I had to start over. ☹️
