Can I paint a mahogany wood door white or black without looking bad?

It is in a very dark front-hall of a small bungalow. I propose to paint internal side of front door white & outside door black: Reasons, To give a little brightness & make a little more modern. There is a window in the door which does not allow enough light. The internal hall is painted in light colours to keep airy with not much effect! Please advise, I am looking forward to hearing from all you creative people. Thank you so much for any help. Best Wishes Honor

You will have to use a really good quality primer -possibly two coats, after cleaning and light sanding. It’s amazing how they can bleed through, and I say this from personal experience.

    Hi Honor,

You absolutely can paint your door white and black. The trick is what color do you paint the rim of the door. When the door is left open, whatever color you see the most of should be the color of the rim of the door. So if the door is open and you see white, paint the rim white. If it's black, then paint the rim black.

Here is the rule...stand directly in front of the side of the door you are painting and open your door a tad....the edge you see should be painted the same color as the side you are painting.

Example...if I am standing outside looking at the outside of my door while it is open, I see the "hinge edge." Therefore, the hinge edge is to be the same color as the front of my door. If I am standing on the inside, facing the inside of the door, I see the "latch edge." Therefore the latch edge would be the same color as the inside of my door.

This "rule" applies to all doors...paint or stain...interior or exterior! Hope that makes sense!

I agree that you need to use primer first. And then buy a good quality enamel paint. It wears well, washes well, and covers well.
