  • Depends on the quality of the spring itself, weather conditions and how much use. My builder grade spring doors lasted 20+ years. When they expired, I replaced with a roll up door on tracks. Was not expensive.

It all depends on how much use the spring gets by opening and closing the door. The spring can be adjusted if the door is not operating properly. I highly recommend calling a garage door company that installs doors to do this job because the spring tension is dangerous.

You could ask how long does a car, television, or dishwasher last. If you made it through the warranty, whenever it fails, it fails and you are on the hook for replacement.

There is no fixed number for any of these things. I have had springs give up after a couple of years and others last for decades or longer. As others have suggested this is not a place to learn by trial and error. If you are not absolutely sure of what you are doing have a pro replace the spring.

I agree with Jim, doing work on the springs of your garage door is not for the do-it-yourselfer. When a spring on our roll-up door snapped, luckily nobody was nearby, because it richocheted all over the garage. Make sure the repairman runs a safety cable through the spring, anchoring it at both ends, so this can't happen to you if the spring breaks.

Depends on how many times the door is opened and closed and how well the mechanics have been oiled etc....
