I toss in some vinegar, couple tablespoons of baking soda, swish it around and let it sit for a bit. Get a dentists mirror to check under the rim. That might need some extra attention. I personally steer clear of essential oils as they can be deadly to animals.

pour the vinegar followed by baking soda in the tank and the bowl and ;et sit overnight
I use Bar Keeper's Friend, it doesn't scratch the porcelain and has a whitener in it.
