I own a upper and lower duplex, my vents are very dusty. I have forced air gas furnaces, and my home stays very dusty. The upstairs vents have never been cleaned, because the tenants up stairs would not allow the company to enter, so they only cleaned my lower flat. this was several years ago. Can I now clean all the vents with my Shop Vac? Is it wise to do so? And how safe is it to do this ?

  • can't hurt to try. I would think any reduction in dust would be a plus!

Been there done it....it’s very safe..there is no wireing it’s all air moving. Duster wand with dusting spray. And....check were the pieces of duct work meet up..I’ve had to dust that off to put the foil duct tape in place. If you find loose fitting pieces of duct work...use the foil tape to hold it together.

Yes, you can use your shop vac. I use the upholstery attachment on my vacuum cleaner to clean the vents. Works very well. A big build up of dust in duct work will make your heat/air work harder. My husband, who used to work in heating/air wants me to tell you that 80% of heat/air service calls are air flow related. Best of luck to you.

Iowa can get summer temps as high as 120 degree Fahrenheit, and have winter temps - 30 degree Fahrenheit. I do want to keep the heat / ac flowing. Don’t forget to put a new filter in the furnace to help the dust Issue...you may need to change it out frequently....

i live in a colder area, any scrap of heat helps. Almost every heating/ cooling duct duct work on that system had gaps -all my nice warm air was in the basement.
