I want to chalk paint top of stained oak cedar chest that has veneer

I have sanded it lightly, but not removed the veneer. It is no longer glossy. Should I use a primer first before I chalk paint it?

No, that's one of the great things about chalk paint, you actually didn't even have to sand, it even sticks to glass! Please share your project when you finish, I'd love to see!

I only use a primer if the finish is dark and Im painting a lighter color

I would, sand lightly between all coats, including the chalk paint, and your sealer, make sure is thoroughly dry before doing each coat of anything. Use at least 220 sand paper.

The purpose of chalk paint (besides the country look) is too eliminate a lot of prep work. You made a good choice. You don't need primer. Depending on how dark it is and how you want the color, it won't need more than two coats. Choose a good quality brush so you don't leave stroke "ridges". Make sure to finish with a sealer or the paint can rub off with some cleaning. I would use a wax. If you want the distressed look, use a tinted wax, otherwise just the clear will do. And I would give it two to three coats or wax. Be sure to let dry and buff between each coat. Or you can apply a poly sealer.
