Extracting air from ziplock baggy.

by Kathy Henning
I sure would love a cheap method of extracting all the air from a ziploc baggy. I make my own hydrated vegetables, and fruits. And I don't want to spend any money on a food dehydrate sealing bags. If you have any creative solution, I am listening. And thank you for your time...

You could try using a straw and inhaling. The bag will flatten. Do Not blow into the bag.

I use a straw, zip the bag up to the straw, suck out the air, then pull out the straw and zip quickly!

Debker, this does work, and it is a fast solution to solving this problem.although it's not a 100 percent solution. I did try this method of yours but I still had a little bit of air.maybe I just need more practice.it took out about close to 90 percent, thanks so much for taking the time for me.

jennyprrs, thank you for posting the link. I did check it out. and I also tried this method.I still need to keep practicing . I need to get all the air out 100 percent.I just now thought of an idea.maybe I will use an empty plastic bottle with a small nozzle. and I will try to press all the air out of it.and put in in the corner of my ziplock baggie.and release the bottle maybe that will draw all the air out. hopefully. jennyprss, thanks so much for taking your time out for me.

Use tall type rectangular ice bin or container filled with water and slowly submerge plastic bag down in water and when all air is out, zip or seal. Works great.

    • Zip the seal, leaving about 1'' open. Get a large container (pot, bucket, etc.) and fill with water. Slowly lower the filled bag into the water until only the open corner is left above the water. Zip the corner and remove from water. Dry the bag completely prior to placing n freezer :)

Debbie Avila Newton, I did try this method of yours, It does take practice, I still had some air in the bag, but I am going to keep practicing till I get this right. This method is better for me to use.I have to get 100 percent air out of the bag. thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions., It does take practice, I still had some air in the bag, but I am going to keep practicing till I get this right. They make zip lock bags and an air pump thingy.... https://www.amazon.com/Ziploc-Vacuum-Starter-3-Quart-1-Pump/dp/B003UEMFUG/ref=sr_1_6_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1523939267&sr=8-6&keywords=vacuum+zip+lock+storage+bags I had an old couple I cared for and they had me use these to break down big packages of chicken into smaller bags for freezing

Zip it all the way across and leave enough space for a straw, cut the straw in half, stick it in the end and suck the air out and quickly close it. I use my mouth, but that's just easier for me.

get a larger pot out deep enough to get to the top so you can seal. fill it with water. put bag with food in the water slowly. the water will get the excess air out. when that happens seal the food bag. label bag w/ contents.

  • Keep at it Kathy, I'm sure you'll master it soon! Sounds like you're almost there. Glad to help.

thanks, Debbie.I did find a way from all of the Hometalkers here, I really appreciated all the time everybody took to help me out. everybody is so creative. It's amazing. well, I did use mostly everybody unique technique. what I did I left a 1-inch opening at the top of the baggie, then released most of the air out, then I took my dried fruits I had in the baggie.and I just made a tight roll grabbing my fruits that were in the baggie and just kept releasing all the air out.it really worked, ok, maybe not a 100% but getting there. I am going to stay with this method, thanks again, everybody!!

    Hi Kathy,

Squeeze all the air out manually!
