It depends on how bad the wood actually is. In order to change the color to a lighter one, you'll need to completely sand down the wood to it's natural color then stain it the color you want and seal it. Sanding might fix the bad parts but if not, you'll need to patch them with a stainable patch compound, sand that down then stain and seal it. I hope that helps. Wishing you the best.
