This banister needs updating And shortening by one dowel. Don’t like the big end. used only to protect people

If you shorten it (make it not a long, if I understand you correctly) - you will have to do something on the floor to repair/replace the wood piece. I would just paint the poles white and darker stain the hand rails with gel stain.
The big spindle is there for extra strength for the railing. I would take off the ball section off the big spindle. Add another piece to it but a different shape. Then sand the spindles a bit, prime them with wood primer. Then paint the sections different colors but each one you paint, paint each one after the same. This way it's consistent and looks good.
You can change the top of the ig spindle and paint it a solid gray, I wouldn't cut it back though
