How did it get so dirty and scummy? Clean it more often with a spray cleaner or Bon Ami which is not gritty and will not ruin the finish.

If the tub made out of? If it is acrylic try Easy Off in the blue can. After cleaning use a buffing pad attached to an electric drill to polish the tub. I did this on my acrylic tub and used a polishing compound to bring the shine back. But don't apply wax to the bottom of the tub that will make a slipping hazard.

Any acid cleaner (scrubbing bubbles is one) but it's really important to apply, let it sit then rinse and apply again after it has been softened. You can use a nylon scrubbing pad, too, but it shouldn't require a lot of elbow grease
