How do I find a ceiling joist?

I'm trying to see if I can put up a fitness pole in my apartment, which needs to be under a ceiling joist. My apartment is in a big block, only built 5 years ago, so;
1) is it even definite it will have ceiling joists? What could it have instead?
2) how do I find them if so? I tried knocking but it all sounds the same to me. Don't really want to buy a stud finder just to use it once.
thanks!

    My local lumber yard has a stock of rental equipment....you might be able to rent a stud finder, and in the city I grew up in, the community center had a tool library...you checked them out like library books, and had to return the tool with in 2 weeks.

    Stud finder is the right tool for the job. They aren't ridiculous expensive. Less than $20 at big box or home improvement stores. You never know when you might need one. In general, good investment.

    Your landlord is really going to allow this? Maybe you can get a look at the architectural plans from the town or city you live in, otherwise don't waste time and get the stud finder I can't tell you how many times it's come in handy from putting in a new closet system to hanging heavy artwork. It's really paid off over the years. Think of it as an investment for the future cause we have had ours for a good 20 yrs.
