How can a person grow a successful herb garden in east Texas?

Answered

Mainly herbs that I cook with (garlic, chives, basil, mint, rosemary). I also want to learn how to grow ginger and lavender if possible.

All possible! You just need to find the right exposure for them. I live in a similar climate and grow all those things. Some in pots, some in ground. I give mine morning to noon sun then shaded for the rest of the day, noon to sunset can be brutal when the Temps are 100° + in the summer.
