Storing them one inside the other helps. Just be careful if you put them on hooks on a wall. I did that with straw hats, thinking I could decorate with them as well, and now some are misshapen.
Knit hats can be packed into boxes or plastic bins. Baseball caps can be hung usually just below the ceiling. Cowboy hats are a bit trickier as they require more space. A hat box with a ring inside and then place the hat upside down with the hat fitting inside the ring. If you are looking for storage for something like a hardhat they stack easily as do berates.
