Remove the railing, add wider steps and plant low shrubs all around.

I was actually thinking about removing the railing.... Just wasn't sure what to put around the edges.

Not sure about making it more stable....it really depends on what needs to be done......you didn't say. To make it look better I would paint it black and add maybe 3 hanging planters to the front and then some bright colored pots with flowers. Bright cushions on the chairs. Maybe a row of plants...hedge, flowers or such to the bottom edge by the sidewalk.

  • Address the stability issue first. What exactly needs to be stabilized? Then it is just a matter of making it look pretty!

yes first shore up the deck to make it stable. painting the decking black will make it hot if you are barefoot. Add several tall posts and cross beams, then screening sliding on wire as a covering. Paint only the railing a pleasing color and have cushions in the same color or a print to match. Having the cross beams be level with the railing, would remove the eyesore of the crooked roof/gutters on the house. Having the beams & posts go all the way across the deck would also tie together the whole thing and not look so disconnected.

I would paint it a lighter color to blend a bit into the house color and change the spindle tops to something less dated. Flat ones would work well. I would also plant low growing flowers in front of the lattice since that looks dated as well.

    Deck repairs first.

Paint, White hand rail with black spindles. Possibly add some shutters and a window box to upper level window With bright red/white flowers and a trifling vine or two. Bright red flower pots For the deck. Red/white flowers along base of deck

When you can't afford it......don't do it. Fix the repairs, add a few flowers and maybe just paint to brighten things. Go with your wallet.....I had a wants list and a needs list.......NEEDS list come first.......Wants come when ya had the extra money. I live by those rules.
