Hawaiian Quilt Inspired Wall Covering

Hawaii is my vacation happy place and on our trip to the Big Island this year, I fell in love, again, with Hawaiian Quilts. Justifiably, true Hawaiian quilts are quite expensive as making one requires all handwork.
While sightseeing, I happened upon a shop that sold handmade quilts and patterns. I jumped in (it's a habit, what can I say) and purchased a pattern book. After reading more about the skills and patience required, I decided to take a different approach and paint quilt squares.
I copied four of my favorite patterns out of the book and enlarged each of them to fit a 12" square canvas. I used my trusty tracing paper to trace the pattern unto the canvas.
I wanted the canvas to look more like fabric so I cut antique white acrylic paint with Gesso and painted right over the tracing. This covered quit a bit of the tracing paper marks and provided a warm background for the "quilt square colors".
I am lucky to have a close friend that is a trained artist to help me understand brush strokes and how to cover up "errors" in color. I will say that while white acrylic doesn't cover much - antique white rocks for covering OOOPs marks.
I wanted to keep the frames very simple and reminiscent of the islands. I noticed that another Hometalker wrote a post about using simple wood trim to make frames for canvas paintings and I copied her idea. Here is a link to her post.

Voila, if you love the islands like I do it is a great, inexpensive reminder. While I was writing this post I realized that I could paint two more and maybe use them as a headboard if I wanted a new look in my bedroom.
