Reconditioning of hard wood floors question

We have hard wood floors in our home which we love, but is worn out in spots and looks very dull. I was told by a hardware store that I should sand all the floors, then put stain and finish with varnish coating. My question is, is there an easy and cheaper way to shine these floors as we live on a very limited income and can not afford going through this expense and labor.

Either home depot or Lowe's has a wood floor stripping machine. It takes the top layer off (down to original wood). You can rent the machines and they are very easy to use. Its like mowing your lawn. Then rests in and seal.
....You could just by a Rug to cover until you have more time and money to do the job or get someone else to do it for you..........
We just put another coat of Varathane on ours and it worked great.

You could try to just refinish the spots but I am reasonably certain you will not like the results...if you want to keep the hardwood, I’m afraid the best advice is that given it you by the hardware store...sand and re-stain, varnish the floors.
Try Mr. Sandler’s for reviving your floor. They did 3 rooms in our house and they look beautiful.

I am supporting what Holly (above) said. If you want them to look new then sanding/stain/varnish is your best option. If you don't mind them showing their age, but improving their look, then strip and refinish like you would a piece of furniture. Be sure to have very good ventilation- a must!
A couple tips:
1) After you let the stripper do its work you can soak up the goop with sawdust and planer chips. 2) If you use oil based varnish, thin it with mineral spirits and apply multiple coats with a rag- an old cotton sock works very well.
