You could put up some shelves, put a table or something under them and put in plants or artificial plants, perhaps a palm or something tall. You can put books or collectable on the table and shelves, along with other things like some books, etc. It would be an out of danger place for collectable figurines or plates where they would be safe. You could also enclose it and put in a door and use it for storage.

You can add shelves. If it is large enough you can slide a chest of drawers in there.
My SIL had a wall under her stairs. A door on it, made for storage. Well, she did not use it for storage....that was her kid's "cubby". They played house, store, school, etc. It was a place they could put their toys when done playing. They had more fun playing and using their imagination. I thought it was great!
Make it a closet. Lots of storage
