What can I do with this space?

We have a chunk of yard between two garages about 16x18. I've planted things, but it's shady most of the day so I've not had much luck. We had some chairs and a small fire pit there at one point, hence the string lights. There are roots above ground so it's difficult to mow. I'm not attached to anything pictured, I can rip it all out and move the smoker, though I'd like to keep the lights. These photos were taken around noon, so that's about as sunny as it gets. Any ideas?
Ground covers and sedum might do nicely?
You didn’t mention your planting zone or location.
Vinca is one that I use under trees or roadside near our rural route mail box under cedar trees where nothing will grow. Note that vinca — it does spread!
Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes and check out plants that grow well in the shade. There are some low-growing ground cover plants that would do well in your shady area. In the summer, you might plant a few colorful potted planters with very bright colorful flowers that also do well in the shade to get some excitement going there to enjoy. Where I live that shade would be welcomed....especially at noon :) Enjoy!
Hostas, bleeding heart, coral bells, Lilly of the valley may all do well here. How about a Hammock?
What about building a pergola. You can hang lights from that and also put down some mulch to cover grass. (May need to kill grass before mulching). Then put some outdoor furniture etc and party all night.
build a small retaining wall next to the garage,plant shade annuals....Coleous,non-stop begonia,fushia,Torenia.In between the chairs place your seating with a bright outdoor carpet, wrap light around the trees

I'd start by hanging a beautiful hammock in between those two gorgeous trees, then I'd have to lay in it for a bit while I thought about more things to do with it. LoL, then I'd add a vertical hanging wall garden to my garage and plant flowers ~what ever grows best in shade They're so great on the knees and it will add color and dimension to the space. In the little sunlit area I would add a small table and chair set with bright cushions. I can see myself having my coffee out there reading a book or the paper. You could also grow a small garden edged in stone in the sunny area. This is a great space, would love to see what you do with it when you're done!
