i don’t know about gardenias, but I do know that after blooming you can take azalea down by a least a third. My neighbor very successfully just cuts it down with a hedge trimmer. Which would make one cheaper to buy.

Of course you can buy large plants. I’ve no idea what they charge “by the inch”. Keep an eye around town if anyone is having gardeners rip out the plantings. People are strange

You may want to move some of the shrubs, spit and plant so thee is symmetry on both sides, add in other perennials same on each side

I would go with some small shrubs (hillera holly) is a compact low growing shrub with little maintenance. Plant a few on each side. Also plant hosta in between but closer to the edge of the border. Then taller blooming perinials in the back Of the shrubs. Don’t plant huge shrubs, your brick is beautiful. You don’t want to cover the brick up.

Go to Garden Centre or Buy on line through Growers - Mature Shrubs the size you need. They will cost a bit, but it's instant gardening. (Don;t forget to tend them.

I wish I could see your style of home.

Blindly, I would tear out shrubs and paint the brick. Put down filter cloth and design with rocks, a dark ground cover interspersed with native plants that provide drama. A wall fountain would be a great focal point or a schulpture with water. I have seen rocks that are fountains. This would attract birds. Paint the railings black or remove them if they are not part of a safety area.

I personally would leave the gardenia! Or at least transplant it to anotheir location. I love to smell the sweet fragrance the blooms provide all summer! I hate azaleas and we tore every single one of ours out when we bought our house. you could put dwarf English laurels in which are compact, evergreen, and have nice blooms in the spring. Then I’d plant some perennials in front to add some much needed color!
