Last year I was infested with ants in my ceiling and all over the yard and garden. I bought a box of 20 Mule Team Borax, sprinkled it as boundaries around it all but not on the food I'd eat. Ants were gone. I understand they're very clean animals, walk through borax, lick their feet, and it kills them.

Fire ants are the worst, I've found well fertilized soil actually detours their arrival. However hot water on the mound has also worked great for me in the past.

Ring the mound with food grade Diatomaceous Earth. The ants will walk through it, taking it into their nest and kill the queen.

Plant mint in small containers around your edibles...Be careful to keep the mint contained in the containers, it can spread like crazy if you don't tend to it regularly....
