Depends on are you putting fish in it, or is it just for decorative use?
I would suggest this is up to you. What is your ultimate goal? Would you like koi to thrive or several species of fish? Regardless, be mindful of erosion (particularly if you're not using a liner). I've seen very shallow homemade ponds that were built for aesthetics. It didn't take long before the banks essentially 'melted' into the pond and it turned into a large muddy puddle!
There are options for pre-fab molds that will provide good details on how deep you'll want to dig.
Good luck!
you can make it as deep or as shallow as you want it. It depends on what your going to do with it. Just remember, you have to clean these often or you get a lot of mold and algae. Fish would take care of that though so if your getting it for fish then I don't think you'll have to clean it nearly as often.
