Source for reasonably priced heavy duty drapery rods ?

I’ve ordered heavy lined custom drapes but the rods seem too expensive. I was told by the salesclerk that people often try to save money by getting rods at places such as Bed Bath & Beyond but that they can’t handle the weight of extra wide 3 layer drapes ( with lining and black out lining too ). I need suggestions of other sources for pinch pleat rods that are heavy duty yet more reasonably priced. Thanks ! Sandra

You could try using a wooden closet pole. They are made to take lots of weight. Get some pretty screw in finials for the ends and you might need a support in the middle if it is a long span.

i JUST BOUGHT SOME PATIO DRAPES AND BOUGHT THE RODS AND DRAPES FROM PENNEY'S. BIG SALE OF 60% OFF RIGHT NOW. CHECK IT OUT. THEY HAVE ALL KIND OF RODS TO ACCOMADATE YOUR 3 LAYERS.

  • To be honest, that's probably something you're not going to find very cheap. Are you insistent on finding a Travis rod or would you be willing to open and close your drapes by pushing and pulling? Have you tried checking some second hand stores?

Yes I would as I prefer to just attach the drapery hooks to rings and then pull them open by hand or with a rod like hotel drapes so often have. Thank you everyone for your suggestions !

Good sturdy metal rods are expensive and will not sag, but they last a life time. I purchased mine through Sears. I'll bet if you go on a website that sells stuff you will probably find some one who still has the old fashioned type rod with the draw string made especially for pleated drapes.

Actually I have two heavy duty wooden rods on my back porch just now! (coincidence) a rod like that would be sufficient and not too costly. Check out Home Depot or Lowes.

JCPenney has a great selection. You can also hang long lengths of PVC pipe - it comes in so many sizes and the home improvement stores will cut it to the correct length,
