Applying Dark Wax With a Small Brush

Medium
After over two years of using my favourite Annie Sloan chalk paint, I've still never been able to get the right look with dark wax. After I picked up a small brush and began experimenting with applying the dark wax with it, I'm finally happy with the results.
A vintage vanity gets a new look with ASCP Versailles, dark wax and gold gilding.
It started with a vanity similar to this one. NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL VANITY. As usual, I forgot to take a "before" shot! But the shape, size and finish are about the same.
The difference between with and without dark wax is subtle. In the "without" picture, I had painted a desk with ASCP Versailles and added some gold gilding wax to bring out the carvings. In the "with dark wax" photo, the drawer details really have a lot more depth.
Twelve dollars!! That's all this small wax brush from Artisan Enhancements cost! Absolutely the best $12 I've spent on supplies for my furniture painting business.
The dark wax was then "detailed" by adding some more clear wax to a cloth and buffing any excess away.
Using small circular motions, I applied a thin layer of dark wax to the details of the drawers and moulding. Then I added gold gilding wax to bring out the highlights.

Love the look of this piece! I'm getting ready to paint my vanity that I've had since I was about 6 years old...now 50 years later, wish me luck!

@Heather - love the finished results. I to have had trouble finding good results using dark wax. But I'll keep trying, one day I hope to end up with a piece that looks halfway as good as yours! Thanks for sharing..
    • @Taf Thanks, Taf!! I msut admit that it was only after I started using the brush that I found I could apply dark wax without it looking cloudy.
