Stain will give it a new color. If you just want to protect it, I'd use Thompson's Water Seal.
Don't stain but use seal-Crete. Found in paint section. Has warranty for 5 years. Every 5 years reseal. Will keep wood looking great. Don't forget to seal the TOP of fence also.
