Any idea what I can use OVER wax to help protect the paint?

I painted my vanity with chalk paint and when I went to wax it, some of the paint came off, so I touched it up and re-waxed over it but every time I wipe off a spot, the paint comes off. I cannot use a poly or lacquer because it will not adhere to the wax. Any idea what I can use OVER the wax to help protect the paint. (I can't sand it as I don't have any more of the same paint left) :0(
Thank you
Anna

    Hi Anna,

There must be something under the paint in that spot that is preventing it from sticking. If it were me, I'd try a primer, but if you're out of paint that won't work. Can you get more of the paint? I don't see any other way you could fix it unless you remove the wax and start over. Although it's possible that you might be able to distress the whole thing and possibly use a glaze. There are also some stronger finishes you can use that you won't have to reapply every few months or yearly. Click on the link below and scroll down to see what this author recommends. Wishing you the best.

I would suggest to call the paint 1-800# for professional consultation. In the past they've been very helpful with our failures even providing replacement product.

Maybe it’s time to sand the bad areas, then go over the vanity with some cream or white wash (very thin paint). Let any coat dry completely, at least three hours for your vanity. Then coat it with a brush-on poly sealer and let it cure for three days. Forget the wax. Enjoy the vanvanity. ☺️Vanity.☺️

If I did the white wash, would it adhere to the wax??? I can't sand the vanity. I'd have to start all over and I don't have the extra paint. (It was my own mix.. :0( DUMB...I know...

      Thanks

I agree, it's something on the original finish preventing your paint from sticking. Unfortunately, if you want a nice finish you may need to strip it down and then apply a good sealer like Kilz and then repaint it. I personally am not a big fan of wax for the final finish.

Go to home depot and get bulls eye spray shellac made by binzzer. It will be shiny. By using a paste wax over it it makes it harder and beautiful. You won't have to sand or start over

Thank you for your reply, but I already have it waxed...will the shellac adhere to the wax.???... If so, do they make the shellac in a brush on. The vanity is in the bathroom, not in a work space.

I'm sorry the question was a little unclear. You said every time I wipe off a spot, the paint comes off so we're not sure if you removed the paint or not. If not, I think you're going to have to strip it down and remove the wax & start all over. I can only find situations where it says to use wax as a resist, where you wax heavily over the areas where you want the color below to show through.

Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s with a chip of your paint or the smallest drawer. They have a color spectrometer that can match any color. Use hot cloths from the microwave to warm and remove the wax. And take photos of this impossible job so we can see what works and what doesn’t. ☺️

Yes they make a quart size. This will be shiny but after putting on the paste wax the sheen will tone down. Hope this helps.

Nothing will adhere to wax, remove it with mineral spirits. Then sand the paint or use liquid sandpaper till you find the area where it stops wiping off. I would use some alcohol to wipe the area, and primer then repaint the damaged area.
