under bed storage containers, are good for off-season clothes, which will free up space in your closet. Plastic shoe boxes, can be stacked on the top shelf.

  • Do you have space elsewhere? I have 4 closets throughout the house and two highboy style dressers - all mine! Utilize every nook and cranny. Under bed for out of season clothes can free up a lot of space, or store shoes under the bed to leave space in the closet.

Use the bags you suck down with a vacuum for seasonal clothes and bedding. Put them in after cleaning and they will be fresh and ready to use when the season comes. You can easily store a lot of them under the bed, it really does reduce the space they take up. I have spare quilts, blankets and pillows stored in them on a shelf in my basement for when they are needed and they are always fresh and ready to use.

We traded In our dressers for cube storage. Gave us so much more clothing storage space. Most dressers have drawers that are only 5-6 inches deep. With the storage cubes, they are 10” deep.

Then you can reorganize your closet and add a second rod to have two layers of hanging space. I usually move the top rod up a bit, and use the shelf with plastic crates to store out of season clothes.

Then i add a 12" shelf above the lower rod to put shoes or folded sweaters on. Make sure when you are installing the second rod, you use a pair of your pants or skirt on the hanger to see how high to hang it so it isn't on the floor. You will need two pieces of 1x4" pieces of wood the depth of the closet to support the second rod. 1 piece of wooden closet rod, or an adjustable metal one the width of the closet minus 1 3/4" (the width of the 2 pieces of cross-brace), a set of closet pole hardware, and a 12" melamine shelf the width of the closet. Install your side brace lumber using screws into the studs. Then add your hardware the height needed for your lower rod making sure you can get the hanger on it with the shelf above and the clothes won't touch the floor. Install the shelf on top of the side braces, and use a block of wood or a shelf bracket in the middle if its a wide closet.

Move the top shelf up and the side braces so you can hang a top without touching the lower shelf.

Try using a trunk or a plastic storage tub you paint nicely to store folded clothes, or shoes, or all the misc. things that are in your closet. Do you have any clothes that are closet hogs, like prom or bridesmaid dresses, or bulky winter coats. Get rid of them, or store in a trunk, or a box under your bed. Go through your warm weather or cold weather clothes. If they don’t fit, look right on you, or you just don’t like them, get rid of them. You’re only going to wear the clothes you look good in, right? Do that with the rest of the clothes and other things in your closet. Use various hangers and space makers in your closet. Find forgotten items in the back, in the corner, in the dark, and discard them if possible. If it’s old photos, toss duplicates, people you don’t remember, and those in which you don't look happy. Then use a smaller box to store the others in. Happy day ☺️
