A summer memory of a cloudy nighttime sky, when a lighthouse and moonlight suddenly revealed the choppy high tide below our condo, is the inspiration for this tabletop.
In the beginning.
It all started with this humble side table. I got my son to pull it out of the garage, and he insisted on sanding the top and sides.

And the world was chaos.
I squirted color full strength from the Unicorn SPiT bottles. With my dark night sky inspiration in mind, I made my best guess as to where the color should lie. We could not even see the surf below us that night, or the waves beyond.

Water upon the firmament.
Using a clean spray bottle filled with water, I squirted a lot of water on the Unicorn SPiT, pushing and building up the color in some areas.

Darkness descended.
I covered the wet paint and table with plastic wrap. We happened to have red from two years ago, so I used that, but clear is fine. You can further blend the colors without using a brush or getting your hands dirty, but I also wanted some peaks and valleys.

Let there be light!
To add to the effect of a moment of light through the dark clouds, I used this dust-weight glitter, a little of each, and a lot of silver, over the waves. I let the ceiling fan help me barely dust some areas. I also touched up the white and yellow.

10 colors of Unicorn SPiT.
I now have ten colors of this wonderful gel/stain/paint, and I used at least a little of each on this tabletop.

Here is the finished tabletop, with two coats of oil-based polyurethane. (Don’t use water-based sealer with Unicorn SPiT.) This looks so much like my memory of that night, when the light came through and changed the whole view!

I spent about $100 on paint, $5 on glitter, and $8 on polyurethane, over about six months. I used about $3 of materials on this, and the table was in my garage.

Did you sprinkle on the glitter to the wet spit? If not how did you get it to stick? I recently used my unicorn spit for the first time and I think next time I want to add some sparkle.
