It depends on where it is going, what is underneath, and what it is used for. Your photo does not show what room this is - kitchen, bathroom, living room, etc? If you need to access the shelves often - keep it lower to reach and then go up from there.

I put baskets on my (vanity area) floating shelves. In my case, I measured the height of the baskets and then added a few inches for access.

It’s a living room wall, no real purpose just for deco.

The height depends on what you need and who will be using them. For example, too low and small children may try to climb on. The distance between them depends on what you need to put on them. If you have a very tall decoration or book for example, you may want to make them farther apart. Most people allow around a foot or little more on average. For a good idea, take a look at book shelves to measure the difference.

First shelf could be in line with your window ledge or is it something else on the left of picture. It can really tart at any height or be at any height, so long as you can reach to get things down and you don't knock yourself on the lower one. Normally about 10-12" apart to allow for bigger books or ornaments, again it what looks right to you and you can use the way you want to. They don't even have to line up one under the other - it's up to you......Nothing is wrong, especially if you are happy with it........

Thanks everyone I decided to do 2 shelves 15” apart.

I’m taking a break but here’s my process

I would say spacing depends on what you will display on them. A formula that makes your display looked cramped will not be good. Measure your tallest item add a few inches to the height and if you want even spacing let that be your guide. Try www.houzz.com and search open shelving there will be hundreds of examples in photos. Hope this helps.

    Hello Linda,

That depends on how much you want to display. Use your eye, a pencil, and a piece of timber to draw on the wall where you think you may like the shelves to be. Rub out if wrong and try again until you are happy with the look. Enjoy the journey!
