DIY Dollar Store Moss Balls

A TIPical Day
by A TIPical Day
Moss balls are all the rage in home decor right now. I really like the look of them, but not the price! During a trip to one of my favorite places (The Dollar Tree) I noticed that they had bags of moss. This set my little wheels to turning. Maybe I could make my own! I did a quick sweep of the store and found some Styrofoam balls then headed to the check out counter.
At home I started to play trying to figure out the best technique for how to apply the moss to the balls.

Note: paint your stryofoam either green or brown. The white is very hard to cover! I learned the hard way!
I decided the best way to apply the moss with some good old fashioned Elmer's School Glue. Wearing rubber gloves, spread the glue over a small section of the ball. Do as I say, not as I do...you will notice that I do not have gloves on in the picture. Hence the reason I am suggesting it now!
Roll the glue section into the moss. Repeat until the whole ball is covered. You may need to pat down sections with your hands.
Once your balls have completely dried, arrange them in a bowl or set them out on a table. FYI mine tend to shed some, so a bowl works well for catching all the loose moss.
You can read the full tutorial on how to make these over on my blog! :) Hope to see you there.

Regular hot glue would melt the styrofoam I'm sure, and what you did worked, just a little more messy. I guess I was looking at the quick and easy and that's not always the best way. ha ha! These really came out great and saved a WHOLE lot of $$ in the end. :)

Try spraying a finished one with hairspray to keep the moss from falling off. These are great.
