Making a Desk More Pallatable

During garage sale season in Ohio my impulse is to stop at every one. Yes I probly need therapy. This sale last summer gave up a beat up, cheaply made, Ugly desk. It has sat there looking at me over the winter being ignored until some modicum of inspiration set in. I noticed a stack of pallet boards in my treasure room and that set things in motion.
The first task was to measure and cut the boards to fit the depth of the top. Pallet boards are warped and uneven so I went through several dozen to find the eight that I needed.
In step two I attached the pallet boards to the top gluing and then using 1 and 1/2 inch finishing screws on each end of the boards.
I sunk the screws in to just below the surface. I back filled with water putty to hide the screw heads.
In step three I used an orbital sander to sand the edges and top of the pallet boards to even out the wonkiness of the boards.
Step four was all about prepping the wood.
The knobs I used were large clunky faucet knobs which I painted with an Oatmeal color. I painted the inside and outside of the drawers the same chalk paint Oatmeal. I sanded the desk to get chippy paint off and painted with a brownish gray color and a coat of finishing wax.
The last step was to put two coats of Tung Oil on the top and screw in the knobs.
This was a relatively easy job which could be changed with different bright colors and knobs for a kids or adult room.
This fun, easy project made this $15 Desk more palletable.

Sorry to be repetitive, but same question as others. I know they have a hole in center for screw or bolt, but what did you use to give more space between desk and faucet knobs? Thank you.
