Honestly, I’d call in a couple of pros to see how wide a hole I could safely make without having to install new joist.
You could simply remove the spindles and paint molding to white to make it appear more open and then perhaps a plant?
These spindles are merely decorative! ...so just getting rid of them will open and modernize the space. You will probably have to patch and paint... but that is not a big deal... you may even want to get fancy with a color and use it to highlight whatever you decide to display there!
If you want to get rid of the wall and not have any posts in the middle of the room, you're going to have to put in a very long beam. The weight of the beam alone will have you calling a builder for installation. Looking at your picture, it is possible to do. You can just have the builder, put in the beam which will require more studs in the walls too. And you can do the rest of the work yourself if you want to. Or you can have him do it all.
Removed a wall between dining room and living room....use two columns. It supported the weight above and added a nice architectural feature. But check with an Engineer first so you balance your weight load.
