How do I clean and protect the stone on a stone fireplace?

We have recently moved into a home with a stone fireplace. The fireplace is about 25 years old and appears to have never been cleaned at all. Is there something I could use to clean it with, soap or ? It looks like a limestone and sandstone type of rock. Also is there anything I could put on the stone to bring out it's color etc. while also protecting the stone?

There are stone sealers but you're right about cleaning it first. The sealer will bring out the stones details but usually darkens it too. We put a sealer on ours and I love how it looks. As for cleaning, I'm not really sure about that. But I would put some dawn in a bucket of hot water and scrub with a scrub brush. Put down a drop cloth or towels to protect your floor and keep it clean.

if it’s soot, experiment in an unobtrusive spot with Awesome cleaner from a Dollar store. Lots of paper underneath to catch drips. And yes, it has to be rinsed, but a great cleane, but I’ve not tried it on stone.

Dawn and hot water. Use a pretty stiff scrub brush. That's what I used on mine, then I used a sealer. It looks great!
