All little girls need a holder for their diary keys. KJ and I were sitting on our couch talking about her newest diary when she said: "Nana, the problem is that I keep losing my keys to my diaries." I responded by saying "KJ, I think we need to make you a key holder!". I quickly gathered up a simple board that I had, some primer and the kiddo's craft paint box and off we went.
Supplies
The supplies that we used were pretty much things that I already had. The board was left over from a particle board unit that we had broken apart and saved some of the boards, the primer was outdoor primer - but that's what I had in the house. The craft paint and brush were things I had for my grandchildren to use. The only supplies I had to buy were the Command Hooks and the metal hanger so she could hang it when she took it home.
Painted and decorated
Unfortunately, I was called away while she was working on her project but here is the process. First she painted the entire board with the primer, then the hot pink craft paint. At that point, lunch was ready so she left it alone to dry (goulash is their favorite and it was ready). After lunch while I was clearing the table, she got back to her project, painted her name on it and added the heart gems that were left over from a Valentine's Day project. The result is above.
Command Hooks
At this point, the kiddo's Mama came to pick them up. I didn't have the Command Hooks or the metal hanger in the house so I went to the store to get them. I attached the Command Hooks to the back of her key holder so that only the hooks showed at the bottom. They were actually put on up-side-down, but these hooks swung both ways so I had that option.
Gluing on the hook
I also added a hanger to the center back of the key holder, using E6000 glue, so she could hang it on the wall. I also realized at this point that she needed some ribbon to hang her keys. I looked through my stash, but couldn't find what I wanted. :( Off to A. C. Moore I went.
I found the perfect ribbon at A. C. Moore. It was on a shelf mixed in with another color and it was the only one like this in the store! I took it to the checkout and with my coupon, it was only $ .37 for an entire roll! I created one loop for her and sent her home, the next time she was here, with the whole roll, after teaching her how to make the ribbon loops and use them.
Here is my precious KJ, showing off her newest project. If you have a little girl who loves her diaries or even if she needs a place to hang some necklaces, this project is easy for them to do and it's the beginning of helping them learn to be organized! I put a time of 1 hour to do this project, however part of that time was drying so it may take less time than that. I hope you enjoyed KJ's project.
