Renee, I just checked into the same issue. In fact I had them killing my trees. Its worth a try for me. (2 oz orange oil, 2 oz blue Dawn dish washing soap to one gallon of water. The orange oil can be purchased on line. Hope it helps. I hate those boogers. I was also told that Sugar and borax mixed the eat the borax. Anything is worth a try for me, It sounds like you have a colony someplace maybe 2 or 3

Carpenter ants are just like termites. They bore into wood. They love damp, dark, moist areas. Terminix needs to find the nest spray it. Visible ants are probably being killed but not the hive.

And you have to use something that will be imported inside your walls. You might try removing some of your window moldings and spraying down inside the walls. The borax or terro has to be carried to the nest. It doesn't work instantly. I've read that the borax should be mixed with bacon grease. Try to figure out where they are coming from--that's the wall you should concentrate on.

I had an infestation of ants in my bathroom and used the borax/sugar/water mix to get rid of them. It will take a few days to notice a difference, but it does work, so be patient. Be sure the mixture is not accessible to pets/young children. Since my problem was in the bathroom I just made sure the door was shut tight until they (the ants) were gone.

Recipe - 1/2 c sugar, 3 Tbsp Borax, enough water to make to syrup consistency. Put in a shallow dish/saucer.

These suggestions are great but Terminix is not cheap! Hold their feet to the fire and insist they get rid of the ants or get a refund!
