My colleague is getting married and she and her fiancé also just moved to a new house. I thought it would be fun to make them a pre-wedding housewarming gift to hang on the wall in their new home, so I came up with this – a modern and fun quote wall hanging!

This was also a good excuse for me to get to create something with my absolute favorite material: cork!

All you need to get started are the following supplies:

Paper letters

Cork Roll sheet

A skewer

T-shirt yarn

Good to have at hand are also scissors, marker, ruler and glue.

Use the letters you need to create your quote and place them on the back of the cork sheet. (If you can’t find ready cut paper letters, you can easily cut out your own out of thin cardboard or use vinyl letters). The letters will be glued on the front side at a later stage.

Mark out the bottom center of the wall hanging with your marker and ruler and trace out the rest of the lines as well.

Cut out the shape according to the lines you have drawn.

Cut out one more in the same size and shape. This part will be used as a back cover. Now you have two identical pieces.

Place out your quote on the front side of one of the pieces. Glue the letters onto the cork. If you are using vinyl letters there is no need to use glue, just tape them onto the cork.

Remove the paper from the back piece and place the skewer at the end. No need to use glue as this side is already sticky.

Remove the paper from the front piece and place it ontop of the back piece, making sure both of the sticky sides meet. Press slightly to make sure they stick together.

Take out your t-shirt yarn and measure out the lenght you want. I used about 12 inches but you can go longer if the size of your wall hanging is bigger than mine.

I acctually chose to make a braid using three 12 inch strips, but this is optional of course.

Finish off by tying the yarn ends to the sides of the skewer, this is enough to keep it in place.

I had to test it on our wall at home and I liked it so much I decided to create one more to keep for myself :)

I hope you and the new couple will enjoy this modern wall hanging as much as I do!
