How can I keep this onion growing inside?

Do I put it in a pot of soil or bowl of water?

I'd appreciate y'alls help. I look forward to sharing the onion's growth with my grandkiddos.

  • I have one just like it.

Just place in a pot with good soil. I only insert the bottom half of the onion. Water well, but let dry out a bit in between waterings. I stick my finger in about 2" deep, if dry give some water. I set in kitchen sink, give it a good drink, let drain well then back to its home.

    • You are most welcome! Ah NC, my girlfriends live in Asheville. You all think it gets hot in NC? Yes it gets a little warm, sticky and a little stuffy. Nope, I am WAY hotter with less than 10% humidity - think of opening the oven door. The humidity is fine for them. Wherever it can get some good light - look how much it has grown just wherever you had it stored. You will know if it is not happy, and then you can just move it to another location. Kids will love it. Take a photo every time they visit. 🌞 Keep me posted, we can track our progress together. ☺

It might keep growing in a larger pot inside with new potting soil. Most onions are only annuals, they do not live year after year like perennials. However, there is one type of onion that multiplies it self called a Mother Onion. With it you would always have a few growing in your pot.

They will love seeing celery, carrots, pineapple. Anything you cut the bottom or top off of. It will root placed on top of soil and in just a couple of days they will see new growth and be so excited.
