Citristrip is the safest but you need patience with this stripper. If you use chalk paint you will not have to remove the stain. You can paint right over it.
Stain absorbs into woodgrain. Stripper will not remove it. Stripper is used for removing paint and surface finishes. Just lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz then paint you color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane.
I concur. Gk is right, citrustrip is the shiznit. You can use it in the house too, no strong fumes and it smells soooo nice😉
Citristrip! I used both, only as I actually enjoy sanding, weird, I know!
Orange citrus is the best I found. It works very fast... Depending on the night stands, it would probably be easier to lightly sand and refinish. Formbys makes a great product for that.
You don't always need to remove the stain if you are painting, especially if the finish is worn or old.
If you give the furniture a good cleaning/light scrub with liquid sandpaper and steel wool, and then wipe off the residue with a lightly dampened textured cloth like a towel, and let everything dry thoroughly, you may be fine.
Then use a high-adhesion primer. Read the label on the primer to make sure you are using the right kind. That is essential so the paint top coat sticks.
I have never removed old stain to cover with paint or gel stain.
Stain is stain and can never be removed completely without sanding. Since you are going to paint, don't worry about the stain. Paint over it.
