In a new townhouse- Where should I start with decor?

When you move into a new home, take some time to get a feel for it. When you're ready, do one room at a time and take one thing at a time so you don't get overwhelmed. Choose colors that make you feel happy and look good in the light of your home. Take time and shop for your owl décor. I think, a few years ago I saw owl cabinet pulls. Check websites like knobs.com. You could do owl canisters for your counter and owl hand towels and wash cloths. Maybe a picture or two of owls. I don't think I would do much more than that though. Just a few nice decorations. Find an "inspiration" piece... back splash, artwork, canisters etc... and make your choices around that: paint colors, cabinet colors, counter tops, flooring etc.... for longevity... choose neutrals in the BIG things like flooring, cabinetry and counter tops...such as gray, white, cream, black, etc... even the back splash... then add the color in wall paper, paint, small appliances, artwork, chair/bar stool cushions.. etc... as to the owls... a few really interesting pieces will get the idea across... and when you want to change... only the accessory things will have go.

Choose a fabric for either curtains, placemats or rug, and pull colours from that pattern. Curtains are good because the pattern is subtle in the pleats.

I would personally choose a pattern with gray, cream, taupy tones, so that you can paint your walls in soothing neutral tones that coordinate together. If you ever tire of the owl theme, you won't have to repaint everything. Then choose small touches of owl accents here and there.
