I've been putting composting material in there for the past two years and every once in a while I dig in the barrel and move the material around but I still don't have real dirt can anyone help

  • If it's too acidy it sorta turns into a slush. Is it dry or wet? Some foods (citrus peels) don't do it any favors. Does it get hot? What is it in? Does it have holes so oxygen can get to it?

It doesn't have any holes I was told it's an anaerobic environment and just to make sure I had it in the sun which I do. It gets very hot inside the barrel. Someone told me I probably need to put red worms in it to help break down material which I haven't done yet. I haven't found any place to buy red worms. My husband told me to go to the bait shop but they only had earthworms and maggots.

Roll the barrel a few times while it's cooking. Spray with water when needed. Use compost starter. Put screen on top of wheelbarrow. Shovel barrel contents onto screen. Put larger, uncompensated pieces back in barrel for next batch.

It won’t turn into “dirt” per say. It become a fertilizer to be added to your soil providing nutrients and nitrogen in depleted soil.

  • Well theres yohr answer. Anaerobic composting has to have worms to work. Otherwise you do aerobic composting. Open the lid and throw some coffee grounds in there to get the process going. You won't need worms

Great idea but we don't drink coffee I wonder if I can borrow some grounds from my next-door neighbor
