A great perennial - which keeps coming back - is hosta. Impatiens are a beautiful annual.
impatiens are great for shade, and come in a variety of colors.
Begonias do great in partial shade also.

There are many different types of hosts available. check with a local garden center (or your towns Garden Club) to see which suits your conditions best.
Impatients and coral bells
Last year I planted large 3 New Guinea impatiens that grew about three feet high and really spread to fill a large space in the front of my house that only gets sun in the early morning and is in shade the rest of the day. I loved them.
