Give us ideas for our porch?

We were going to build a porch on the front of house but because of neighbor hood restrictions we are not aloud to do that. We need options because we really need something to shield the front from the hot sun. Can you help us with this?

You could try a retractable awning.
Have you looked into Sun Setters they put a canopy on the house that rolls-up when your not using it. And when the sun is really hot let it down and you can sit out and enjoy your front yard.

I would put reflective film on the windows to reflect heat back and prevent UV damage to interior. That sounds like a good idea.... I live in Las Vegas and looked into those "crank" type awnings and saw nothing but good reviews. However, we get such high winds here that I went with a "built" awning. Try putting another question on Hometalk like, "Has any one used the crank type awnings on their home?" I'm sure you'd get quite a bit of feed back. Good Luck!
At our last house, we installed solar screens on the windows. It helped with heat and UV damage. We also put in fairly fast-growing shade trees to help combat the sun. We used Cleveland Pears. They quickly grew very tall and with a large, shady canopy.
