DIY Stay Awhile Sign

We finally started renovating our laundry room/mudroom hybrid room. Since the majority of the room will serve as a mudroom, I wanted to have something nice and welcoming when we walk into the house. While searching for a “Welcome” sign idea, I happened to land on an Etsy page with tons of “Stay Awhile” signs. And oh boy – did I get inspired! With dozens of ideas in mind, I ran downstairs to our basement and grabbed a frame that would fit my needs.

I bought this frame about 3 years ago from Hobby Lobby’s discount aisle. I didn’t have a plan for it back then, but the price was too good to pass up. It was originally black with silver highlights, and 2 years ago I painted it white, as my plan was to use it by our front entry. But that plan never came alive, so the frame joined my don’t-know-what-to-do-with-it-yet-but-one-day-will-figure-it-out frame collection in the basement. Well…that day has come.

As our sign will eventually hang on a white-washed faux brick wall, I wanted a chalkboard sign with a black frame. You know… to have some nice contrast. I painted the frame with two coats of black paint. While waiting for the paint to dry I asked my hubs to cut a chalkboard piece for the frame.

Next, I designed the stencil for our Stay Awhile sign, which I'm sharing the stencil design at the end of this post. Using my Cricut, I cut the stencil and after placing the pattern on the chalkboard I stenciled the sign.

Then I placed my boxwood wreath on the frame as shown in the picture below...

...and taped my wreath's ribbon at the back of the frame, so the wreath wouldn't slide out. With that my stay awhile sign was complete! I can't wait for our renovation to finish, so I can hang our sign to it's place :-)

So what do you think? I have to say, I couldn’t be happier with it!! :-) In fact, I love it so much that I wanted everyone to be able do something similar, whether they have time and means to DIY it or not. Hence I prepared not only the stencil files, but also all these free printable “Stay Awhile” signs for you to pick and chose from.

I have a set of three miniature suitcases that stack one in the other. They are a Cordovian color with straps that buckle to close the suitcases. They look like they’re leather but I’m sure they aren’t. I used them as a small table by a side chair. They have worn considerably and the loops that hold the straps down are broken. I was thinking about painting them but I don’t want them to look so fake. Should I just toss them or does anyone have any idea what I could do with them?
