How do you remove rust from under a toilet rim?

My daughter bought a townhouse in an area with hard water. Under the rim of the toilet is rusty. I tried The Works and though it seemed to remove some of the stain it didn't remove it all. Any remedies out there that I can try would be appreciated.

Try white vinegar followed by baking soda in the tank and the toilet leaving it in the bowl long enough to remove the rust
CLR is a good product to try on bathroom fixtures.

Soak a rag with CLR and stuff it under the rim; let it sit overnight. That should work.

Seriously..don't even mess with buying all those cleaners. You can replace it very cheaply.
