I rent a townhouse and cannot remove carpet. Any creative ideas for treads or adding to very boring carpet. Thanks.

I don't know how secure you'd need this to be, but industrial velcro and a carpet runner could do the trick. If you push in the areas and 'smoosh' a dowel (where the tread meets the riser), you'd not be permanently adhering the runner. The velcro underneath will also help secure in place.

Thank you so very much Andra for you suggestion. A runner did cross my mind but was not sure about securing it. Now, I shall google 'smoosh a dowel' and give it a shot! Thanks again.

Or you can just do the risers, with clear double-face tape.

While it depends on how much, if any, overhang your steps have, and how thick the carpet is that’s covering them, you’ve options like painting cardboard or foamcore ($1 at Dollar store), cutting up placemats, etc etc.

Few folks notice what they’re stepping on. Everyone sees risers.

Neither dowels or velcro will be strong enough to hold a runner in place on a stairwell. When runners start pulling away from the step, they can make the stairwell very dangerous : an accident waiting to happen. For safety, anchor a runner on a stairwell with proper stairwell runner metal rods.

If the runner is going over a carpeted stairwell, the problem will be trying to find long enough screws to go through the carpet and into the wood to adequately hold the mount securely in place.

Thank you. However, I think the rods will be too much (financially and aesthetically). Thinking to do something else and promise to post if successful. LOL

Hi there! I am asking years later but am also about to rent a townhome with sad-looking carpet stairs! Did you find a method that worked well?

You could add a runner over the carpet.
