What can I do to my red brick, full wall fireplace other than paint?

Hi Hometalk!
We are doing a full house renovation and getting close to end of our time line and our budget. At this point tile isn’t an option and typical paint is too generic. I’d like inspiration on something to make it match the rest of the newer style in our house without breaking the bank.
Thanks,

You can sheetrock over it and put in a nice mantle. You can use stucco to cover it. I honestly think a white wash stain would look great.

Depends on if the fireplace is to be used or not. There are hundreds of materials to cover it with if you are not going to use it; curtains, paper mache, thin metal sheets, crumpled aluminum, and the list goes on depending on your style. However, if you plan on using the fireplace you are restricted to fireproof materials like cinder blocks, ceramic tiles, stone, slate.

  • Personally, I would pick up white or one of the greys in the flooring and paint the brick. (PS, love the floor - I have similar that we put on a diagonal and I still love it after 2 years)

Thanks Elizabeth. Glad to hear you still love your similar floor.

What about painting the brick white & covering with aluminum sheets like this?

I saw Chip Gaines do a "German Schmear" at Joanna's request. I Googled it, and think I am going to try it on my friend's rock fireplace. You basically fill in some of the areas with Quik-rete mortar mix, then white-wash it so it looks like plaster has fallen off to reveal brick beneath. Adds a lot of interest, but then just about everything Chip and Joanna do is interesting. Good luck!

Use brick stain NOT paint. You will maintain the brick texture and have much less maintenance with stain
